SUSTAIN-A-BITE

Welcome to sustain-a-bite

Sustainability Starts With You!
Sustain-A-Bite was born from a simple observation: millions of tonnes of plastic fruit packaging end up in landfills and oceans every year, poisoning our planet for generations to come. We watched strawberries, raspberries, and blueberries, symbols of nature's bounty, being wrapped in packaging that contradicted everything they stood for. In 2024, our team decided to change this. We asked ourselves a revolutionary question: What if fruit packaging could be as natural as the fruit itself? That question led to the creation of SUSTAIN-A-BITE—100% compostable, biodegradable fruit punnets that protect your produce without harming the planet. Today, we're on a mission to prove that sustainability and quality aren't trade-offs. They're the future.

More Than Just Packaging

A glimpse into the passion, creativity, and purpose driving Sustain-A-Bite toward a more sustainable future.

Our Purpose

Our Vision: A world where every piece of fruit reaches consumers in packaging that nurtures rather than harms. Where sustainability is standard, not special. Where New Zealand leads the global movement toward zero-waste food packaging. Where businesses compete on sustainability, not just price. Our Mission: 1. To revolutionize fruit packaging by creating premium, 100% biodegradable punnets that: 2. Protect produce from farm to table 3. Fully decompose naturally in 6-12 months 4. Reduce plastic waste in landfills and oceans 5. Empower businesses to make sustainable choices without compromise 6. Make eco-friendly packaging the default, not the exception

Our Journey So Far

Our journey began with a simple goal: to create a sustainable alternative to plastic fruit packaging. Since then, it has grown into a project driven by innovation, research, and a commitment to making a real environmental impact. In 2025, our team earned Excellence in Sustainability and advanced to the regional finals, recognising the potential of our idea and the hard work behind it. This achievement inspired us to keep pushing forward and refining our vision. To deepen our understanding of sustainable materials, we travelled to Scion, where we explored the science behind biodegradable packaging. We learned about different natural materials, decomposition rates, food-contact safety requirements, and the testing needed to create packaging that is both safe and environmentally responsible. We have also been hands-on throughout the development process, creating and testing our own prototypes at home. By experimenting with materials such as strawberry pulp and other plant-based fibres, we have explored their strength, durability, and potential as alternatives to conventional plastic packaging. Each prototype has helped us improve and move closer to a viable solution. Another exciting milestone was our visit to the Auckland Chamber of Commerce, where we had the opportunity to pitch our idea to entrepreneurs and business leaders from across New Zealand. Presenting Sustain-A-Bite to experienced professionals allowed us to receive valuable feedback, gain new perspectives, and build confidence in our mission. Their encouragement and support reinforced our belief that innovative, sustainable ideas can make a meaningful difference. From awards and research trips to prototype development and pitching our vision, every step of our journey has brought us closer to creating packaging that protects both fresh produce and our planet. And this is only the beginning.
